Area Information

Bullitt County was named for Alexander Scott Bullitt, a leader in the political formation of Kentucky. Among his many accomplishments were drafting the first Kentucky Constitution, President of the State Senate (1792-99) and first Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky.

The earliest known name of Mt. Washington was "The Cross Roads" because of its location around the intersection of Highway 31E and Highway 44. The Cross Roads name was later changed to Mt. Vernon, but when a post office was applied for, it was discovered that there was already a city in Kentucky with that name. Consequently, Mt. Washington was the name accepted. It was incorporated in 1822.
